The Helix Park Adirondack Chair Art Contest is a public art initiative that invites artists of all levels to transform Adirondack chairs into unique works of art. Now in its second year, the 2025 contest celebrated the theme “HOUSTON 2026: ACTIVATE THE WORLD CUP WITH TMC,” honoring Houston’s upcoming role as a FIFA 2026 host city.
Artists explored concepts such as athletic performance, brain concussions, biomechanics, and rehabilitation, which are all vital areas of research happening across the Texas Medical Center.

TMC: Healing the World One Goal at a Time: First Place

“TMC: Healing the World One Goal at a Time” was honored with first place from the judges. The artwork encapsulates the shared mission of TMC and the World Cup: to bring the world together in pursuit of a common goal. Just as TMC leads breakthroughs in medicine that heal people worldwide, the World Cup brings together nations in a spirit of friendly competition.

The design illustrates how sports teams embody collaboration, discipline, and a shared vision. It draws a parallel between teamwork on the field and cooperation in the lab, leading to the athlete’s victory and the patient’s recovery. In both science and sports, innovation arises not from isolation, but from the strength of the team.
Texas Resilience: Third Place

“Texas Resilience” explores the intersection of sports, life science, and innovation through animals that serve as enduring symbols in Texas athletics. Each animal embodies traits of athletic performance while also connecting to scientific research on concussions, biomechanics, endurance, and rehabilitation. Together, these animals form a living atlas of sport and science. Painted on this chair, a place of pause and renewal, they remind us that the future of athletics and medicine lies in learning from the natural world.
