TMC Helix Park

January - February 2024

The Texas Medical Center thanks the Houston Botanical Garden for bringing a burst of vibrant color and rich Chinese cultural traditions to Helix Park.

In early 2024, two illuminated sculptures from Radiant Nature, a special exhibition by Houston Botanic Garden, were installed at TMC Helix Park as part of a cultural collaboration celebrating the Lunar New Year. Created by Tianyu Arts & Culture Inc., the larger-than-life praying mantis and bee sculptures—crafted from vibrant silk and lit from within—were displayed outside the TMC3 Collaborative Building from January through February.

Inspired by nature and Chinese cultural traditions, the installation combined traditional Chinese lantern-making techniques with contemporary artistry. Each sculpture was handcrafted over several months. A team of 25 artisans from China traveled to the United States to complete the final assembly and installation within a month. Their work marked TMC Helix Park’s first cultural celebration, welcoming the community to engage with light, art, and tradition in a shared public space.

About the artist: Tianyu Arts & Culture Inc., is a company that specializes in creating and organizing lantern and light festivals. They are the largest producer of Chinese lantern festivals in North America.
